SINGING
UP A STORM
Camp Ogontz, NH
“Beside the lake,
beneath the trees”, choral singers and conductors from all over the
country gathered
together to camp in the White Mountains and SING ALL DAY. And it was
wonderful! Hosted by Lynn and
George Kent and the Chorus of Westerly, RI. we all joined in the camp experience with daily chores,
hearty and delicious meals, walks and swims, tennis and BYOB
gatherings but mostly it was about the
singing.
An hour’s warm up with
Paula Rockwell, mezzo soprano and voice clinician
from Nova Scotia, included the whole body, not just the vocal bits. Dynamic,
warm and funny, she soon
coached us out of early morning huskiness and
prepared us for the first of three daily sessions with
England’s
Sir David
Willcocks A clear favorite here at Ogontz, returning for the thirteenth
time, Sir
David challenged and chivied us through a whole book of 20th century
anthems, Bach’s St John
Passion, Elgar’s “The Music Makers”, Waltons’ “Belshazzar’s Feast” and
Vaughan William’s Mass in G
Minor. We worked and we won!
A finale which included
the great British patriotic hymn “Jerusalem” and “Auld Lang Syne”
capped off
an inspiring choral week.
WORKSHOPS OFFERED EVERY
SUMMER WITH FINE CONDUCTORS & NO AUDITIONS!
